Comrades Marathon 2015 – leading ladies
Yesterday I had the privilege of photographing the leading ladies of the 90th edition of the Comrades Marathon – the worlds longest and oldest ultra marathon race. Riding backwards on a motorbike with two cameras hanging off your shoulders while trying to catch these amazing woman has taken its toll, as I write this it feels as if I was the one who did the marathon!
Besides being blown away by the strength and speed of the ladies, I was amazed at their composure. These ladies have to battle not only the road but the crowd of men that bunch around them for some TV time. Often I would hear “HEY! MOVE!” as one of the men would drift over a little too far. Through these difficulties the ladies stayed focus and even had the energy to give the camera a smile or a wave. I soon became their biggest fan and when finally Caroline Wostmann took the lead over the Russians I could not help but have a grin on my face all the way to the finish line. At the 5km mark I left the ladies and rushed to the finish line to catch them coming in. To my surprise Charne Bosman had ploughed right through the Russian twins since I left her and came in second.
What a fantastic result for South Africa and well done to all the others that ran the race…You are all crazy but I’m proud to have been able to be a part of your craziness in some way.
